![]() ![]() ![]() In 1804, he received an honorary Master of Arts degree from Middlebury College, becoming the first Black in the country to receive an advanced degree. Haynes developed an international reputation as a preacher and writer. He was the first African American ordained in USA. Lemuel Haynes was licensed to preach in 1780 and became a minister in 1785. Haynes had an opportunity to attend Dartmouth College, but turned it down because of his love of the bible and the ability to study with a clergyman in Connecticut. ![]() Here, he contacted typhus and had to return home. In 1774 Haynes joined the minutemen of Granville and in 1775, he marched to Roxbury, Massachusetts after the battle of Lexington and Concord. He immediately enlisted in the local militia and became a Minuteman. When his indenture ended at the age of 21, he became a free man and thus eligible to enlist in the militia. He conducted services in the town parish and even wrote his own sermons. Abandoned at an early age, when he was found, he became an indentured slave until the age of 21.Īlthough he only had a basic education, he developed a love of books and studied the Bible and theology.
