![]() ![]() ![]() He was a special agent for the Treasury Department, one of the famed T-Men. Many believe those years in Cleveland cost him his health, his first marriage, and his career. Ness never talked to the papers or pointed the finger of blame, but I think Eliot Ness knew who the Butcher of Kingsbury Run was, and he did his best to bring the carnage to an end. As he said in the story, finding the Butcher wasn’t like taking out Al Capone. The mystery surrounding the Cleveland Torso Murders of the 1930s dogged Eliot Ness for the rest of his career. Maybe that is what makes heroes of regular men and what makes regular men (and women) heroes. He wanted to do the right thing, and even though he had his flaws and his selfish ambitions, he was not ruled by them. The thing that stands out for me with people like Eliot Ness is that he was good. As so often happens in these historical journeys I take, the sadness of the history often overwhelms me, and I wonder how I’m going to give my readers a happy ending-or even a sense of an ending-when history is messy and hard and often sad. He was an interesting figure for me, a man I liked. Eliot Ness died of a heart attack when he was only fifty-four. ![]() ![]() ![]() Minnick studies the men who've been championed as the inventors over time, from Daniel Boone to Baptist minister Elijah Craig and, based on his new research, definitively answers who most likely invented bourbon. ![]() Filled with more than 100 illustrations and photos, Bourbon unfolds as a sort of loose mystery as Minnick explores who most likely invented the sweet corn liquor we now know as bourbon. Today, it is still possible to trace St Augustine's experiences, thanks above all to the Confessions, written to praise God and which are at the origin of one of the most specific literary forms of the West, the autobiography or personal expression of one's self-knowledge. ![]() ![]() By doing so I wished to express to him the homage of the entire Catholic Church, but also to manifest my personal devotion and gratitude in regard to a figure to whom I feel very linked for the role he has had in my life as a theologian, priest and pastor. Last year, during my Pilgrimage to Pavia to venerate the mortal remains of this Father of the Church, I particularly dedicated my reflection to this experience of his. After having dwelt on his life, works and some aspects of his thought, I would like today to return to his inner experience which made him one of Christian history's greatest converts. With today's meeting I wish to conclude the presentation of the figure of St Augustine. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It was where I’d gone to school, met my best friends and spent every weekend, but I didn’t belong there anymore. I’ve been directly involved in the first of those since childhood – the natural world is the basis for everything I do, both professionally and personally. If Women Rose Rooted is a combination of three topics I care strongly about: nature, women and Celtic mythology. One aspect I didn’t like about this book is how some parts were unrealistic. The rest of the book was from the perspective of the four students as the homicide investigation happened. There were four other students in the room at the time of the incident making them the main suspects of Simon’s death. The paramedics took him to the hospital, but he didn’t survive. His epi pen wasn’t in his backpack and there weren’t any at the nurse’s office. As he drank it, Simon went into anaphylactic shock from a peanut allergy. One of the students, Simon, got a cup of water from the back of the room. The book started with five students in detention at Bayview High School. ![]() “One of Us is Lying” kept me engaged from the first chapter to the very end and I cared about the characters. The conspiracy of language becomes obvious as soon as one recognizes the fact that words are defined solely in terms of other words, never in terms of things outside of language. But language is crafty it seems to have its own interests more than ours at heart. ![]() ![]() It looks like something neutral, a tool for doing things, some good, some not so good depending on its user.
